GCSE Options Guide: How Many Subjects & What to Choose

What are the GCSE options? How many GCSEs do you take, compulsory subjects, and how to choose options for sixth form and future careers.

How many GCSE options can you pick?

Most students take 8–10 GCSEs in total. Compulsory GCSE subjects usually include English Language, English Literature, Mathematics and Science (Combined or Triple). Schools then offer 3–4 option subjects chosen in Year 9.

What GCSE options are there?

Common options include History, Geography, French, Spanish, Computer Science, Art, Music, Drama, PE, Business, and Religious Studies. Your school publishes its option blocks each spring — choices must fit the timetable.

How to choose wisely

  1. Check sixth form requirements — selective courses often need grade 6+ in related GCSEs
  2. Balance workload — essay-heavy subjects (History + English Lit + RS) can stack up
  3. Science pathway — see our triple vs combined science guide
  4. Play to strengths — but avoid choosing only "easy" subjects if they close doors later
